At today's press conference in Las Vegas for the Julio Cesar Chavez Jr vs Sergio Martinez fight on September 15, ticket information was announced and so were the odds on the Wynn sportsbook.
The odds are opening tight, with Martinez (49-2-2, 28 KO) favored at -170, and Chavez (46-0-1, 32 KO) at +150 on the book. Those are closer odds than some might have expected, and we'll see how that moves going forward, but I honestly think they're about right. This is a good matchup, and could be tough for both of them.
Today's press conference was pretty heated, but not so much between the fighters as much as between Sergio Martinez and Julio Cesar Chavez Sr, who called on Martinez not to run on September 15, and to stand and fight. Of course Team Chavez would prefer that, since Sergio could very easily box Junior's ears off, but Sergio said he won't be running in the fight, and also said that he plans to make it so that Senior won't be able to recognize his son after the fight.
This feels, truly, like a grudge match. These sides don't like each other, and most of the trash talk right now is coming from Martinez's side, as both he and trainer Pablo Sarmiento were bold today, while Chavez Jr and Freddie Roach (who was short on time, as he's got Amir Khan fighting on Saturday) were fairly restrained in comparison.
Tickets go on sale tomorrow and can be purchased at the Thomas & Mack Center box office in Vegas, or online at UNLVtickets.com, priced at $600, $400, $200, $100, $75, $50, and $25.
