Tonight at 10 p.m. EDT on HBO, Adrien Broner (23-0, 19 KO) faces Vicente Escobedo (26-3, 15 KO) in a 12-round main event that was supposed to be for Broner's WBO super featherweight title, but in the last 24 hours, has taken several turns thanks to Broner's failures to make weight on two occasions.
First, Broner missed weight yesterday, coming in at 133½ pounds for the 130-pound bout. Stripped of his title, which Escobedo can still win tonight, Broner agreed to a Saturday morning weigh-in, where he couldn't weigh more than 140 pounds. But he weighed 143 this morning, and after lengthy negotiations, Team Escobedo walked away from the fight.
Shortly after that, money spoke loudly enough, and Escobedo agreed to fight tonight. He's rumored to be making over double his original purse ($150K) for the fight.
In the co-feature, Keith Thurman (17-0, 16 KO) will face Orlando Lora (29-2-2, 19 KO) in a 10-round welterweight bout. Thurman, 23, is an Al Haymon prospect who is getting the spot mostly because of that. Lora, 31, is mediocre at best but a step up for Thurman anyway. There will also be highlights of Omar Figueroa vs Dominic Salcido.
