Danny Garcia will face Erik Morales in a main event rematch on October 20 at the new Barclays Center in Brooklyn, home of the NBA's Brooklyn Nets, with Paulie Malignaggi and Peter Quillin part of the undercard. Showtime will televise the event.
Garcia (24-0, 15 KO) won his first world title in March against Morales, outpointing the Mexican warrior in Texas on HBO. Morales (52-8, 36 KO) was out of shape for that fight, missing weight and looking pudgy even for the junior welterweight version of Morales, but still hung in with his usual grit and determination.
Morales feels that gall bladder surgery, which postponed the fight from its original January date, was to blame for his poor conditioning, and that with time to prepare, he'll be in better shape for the rematch.
Garcia, of course, saw his stock shoot way up with his July 14 stoppage of Amir Khan. Garcia is a hot commodity right now, and it's not really any surprise that he's moving to Showtime, which is becoming the new home for Golden Boy fighters.
Malignaggi (31-4, 7 KO) will defend his WBA welterweight title on the show. He was originally thought to be in line for the main event, as he's a Brooklyn native, but even with his career given new life after he embarrassed and dominated Vyacheslav Senchenko in April, there just might not be a main event-level fight for him available on that date. There was recent talk of Malignaggi facing a comebacking Ricky Hatton, but Hatton's comeback for now remains a rumor. And if that fight did happen, it would really make sense for it to be in the UK, where a Hatton return would be major news, and where Malignaggi has a pretty good following, as well.
Quillin (27-0, 20 KO) last fought on June 2, retiring Winky Wright with a one-sided win in California. Top junior middleweight prospect Eddie Gomez (9-0, 6 KO) will also be in action on the October 20 card, as will locally popular welterweight Dmitriy Salita (33-1-1, 17 KO), and comebacking Danny Jacobs (22-1, 19 KO), who has beaten cancer and is now making a return to the ring.
HBO will likely have a show on the same night, with Nonito Donaire facing Jorge Arce in the main event, with a co-feature fight between Orlando Salido and Mikey Garcia strongly rumored for the show, as well.
