Shawn Porter stayed unbeaten, fighting through blood, headbutts, and a chippy and determined Alfonso Gomez, to win by unanimous decision in San Jose, live on Showtime. Judges' scorecards were 96-94, 97-93, and 98-92 for Porter. Bad Left Hook had it 97-93 for Porter.
[ Live Coverage: Guerrero vs Aydin ]
Porter (20-0, 14 KO) was cut in the first round on one of many, many headbutts that littered the scrap, as both he and Gomez (23-6-2, 12 KO) were coming forward aggressively and colliding at times. But though the 31-year-old Gomez made clear early that Porter wouldn't be having an easy night, landing right hands almost at will for a time, Porter fought through his own mistakes and the adversity brought by the veteran, and used his speed, athleticism, and sharp combination punching to take over the fight.
By the middle rounds, Gomez was exhausted, but just kept coming anyway. Porter, 24, busted him up to the face and body, constantly throwing three, four, and five punches at a time, at times overwhelming Gomez with his speed.
The real differences were the speed of Porter, and the fact that Gomez, no matter how clean he landed, just couldn't hurt Porter. Porter did hurt Gomez on a couple of occasions.
It's a fine step-up win for the Ohio prospect, who says he's ready to move forward toward the bigger fights out there. He's still got flaws, but he certainly proved he can hang in a tough fight tonight.
