Tonight at 10 p.m. EDT on HBO, Nonito Donaire leads a double-header from the Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif., with former middleweight world champion Kelly Pavlik in the co-feature.
[ Preview: Donaire vs Mathebula, Pavlik vs Rosinsky ]
Donaire (28-1, 18 KO) will be looking to unify his WBO super bantamweight title with the IBF belt held by Jeffrey Mathebula (26-3-2, 14 KO). It will be the first time in his career that the popular, 29-year-old Filipino considered one of the best in the world pound-for-pound, will be at a significant disadvantage in terms of size, as the 5'10" South African will have at least about three inches on him. It could make for a very interesting matchup, as Donaire has just one fight in this weight class under his belt, a February win over Wilfredo Vazquez Jr.
Pavlik (39-2, 34 KO) has won his first two fights under new trainer Robert Garcia, but those came against very limited club fighters in Aaron Jaco and Scott Sigmon. New York's Will Rosinsky (16-1, 9 KO) gave Edwin Rodriguez a hell of a fight last year, and it's been a long time since Pavlik has even looked like a fighter on the level of prospect Rodriguez.
Pavlik's last three bouts have seen him look varying degrees of rusty, and he'll need to have a better performance in him tonight. He does get some serious credit for flying back into action a month after his last fight, as does Rosinsky.
