The scheduled October 6 fight in Puerto Rico between Wilfredo Vazquez Jr and Rafael Marquez has been canceled, but Vazquez Jr will stay in action that night against Jonathan Oquendo, and the show will go on.
Vazquez Jr vs Marquez was originally set to go on August 4, but Marquez injured his right hand in training camp (which was legit, judging by the photos) and the fight was postponed until October. Now, Marquez has come down with some kind of stomach virus.
Rather than wait on Marquez again, the Vazquez team has decided to simply move on. Fellow Puerto Rican Jonathan Oquendo (22-1, 15 KO), who was scheduled for the undercard, will move up to the main event to take on Vazquez (21-2-1, 18 KO).
After winning the WBO super bantamweight title in 2010, Vazquez has lost two of three, dropping an exciting fight last year to Jorge Arce and a not-so-exciting fight this year to Nonito Donaire.
The show's co-feature is still scheduled to be a 105-pound title fight between Moises Fuentes and once-dominant Ivan "Iron Boy" Calderon, who hasn't looked good at all in recent fights and may be getting the final big shot of his career.
