Sampson Lewkowicz says that Sergio Martinez will look to return to the ring in May 2013, after he rests up and recovers from some injuries -- including torn ligaments in his knee and a broken hand -- from last Saturday night's win over Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.
"Martinez will likely return in May. We have to see what the doctor says, but I believe he will be back in May. At the moment we don't want to discuss any opponents, but once we confirm how long Martinez will be out, then we will explore the possibilities."
May 4 will be the big fight weekend that month, and there's already speculation that the date could be Canelo Alvarez vs Miguel Cotto, or possibly Floyd Mayweather's next fight -- which could be against Canelo or a rematch with Cotto, conceivably.
Martinez (50-2-2, 28 KO) could also be in that discussion. He's said he wants to fight Cotto, and there's a little chatter about a Canelo-Sergio fight, too, and Sergio of course would jump at the opportunity to fight Mayweather at 154 pounds if that were presented.

Of course, there will be three other Saturday nights in May 2013, too, and it's way too early to really speculate on what could be happening then -- we're talking eight months away, and we have no idea what could go down in the meantime. Canelo wants to fight again in December, Cotto is facing Austin Trout on December 1, and Mayweather really hasn't made any boxing noise since getting out of jail in August.
