A WBC purse bid for a heavyweight eliminator between Chris Arreola and Bermane Stiverne will be held on September 29 in Las Vegas.
Arreola (35-2, 30 KO) is set to return on November 10 at Staples Center in Los Angeles, part of Showtime's quadruple header that night. He's fought just once in 2012, a February win over Eric Molina. Stiverne (22-1-1, 20 KO) has also only fought one time this year, defeating club fighter Willie Herring in Miami on April 14.
Arreola currently holds the No. 1 spot in the WBC rankings, with Stiverne at No. 2. As is often the case, Stiverne has already won an eliminator, beating Ray Austin in a miserable fight on HBO.
Arreola's 2011 was very busy, with the gimmick being that he fought consistently in order to stay in shape, but that has been abandoned this year. Arreola was set to return on June 23, but pulled out due to injury.
Arreola is currently promoted by Goossen Tutor, with Stiverne promoted last I knew by Don King. There probably isn't a large bid coming either way, but if Golden Boy wanted this fight for their 11/10 show, they could come in and throw down a bid that King (or anyone else bidding "for" Stiverne's side) couldn't beat, basically, and secure the fight. But I have no idea if that's something they've thought about, or if this will really go anywhere.
