Oscar De La Hoya on Cotto vs Trout, possible Cotto-Canelo Alvarez fight in 2013

Oscar De La Hoya of Golden Boy Promotions spoke with Boxeo Mundial about Miguel Cotto's upcoming fight with Austin Trout, and a possible showdown next year with Canelo Alvarez. Oscar was, as usual, prone to cliche, but there's some interesting stuff here to be sure.

Oscar on Miguel Cotto's place on the boxing star pecking order

"Well in terms of skills, in terms of popularity, there's no secret that Miguel Cotto is right there with (Mayweather and Pacquiao). Yes, Miguel Cotto fought Manny Pacquiao, yes, Miguel Cotto fought Mayweather, but he gave them the toughest fights of their careers. He's a warrior. He's a lion. He's a tiger. He's a fighter that people love to watch, whether he wins, whether he loses, whether he has a draw, he's gonna come out and fight and give a great show."

"He has everything to win and nothing to lose. And those fighters are very dangerous, very difficult. Unpredictable. You don't know what they're gonna come with. It's gonna be a tough fight. I believe that Austin Trout is going to be in the best shape of his life, no doubt about it. This is the biggest fight of his career. It's a dangerous fight. I personally don't like it. The fact that Austin Trout is young, is hungry, is determined. He feels it's his time. He's going up against a legend in the making. Are we gonna see a fight where youth overcomes experience and age, or are we gonna see the old warrior step it up once again and give us an electrifying performance? It's gonna be quite a show, quite a spectacle. I'm looking forward to it."

"That's definitely possible. That's a fight that really gets me really motivated and pumped up, if something like that can happen. But again, you never know in boxing. One punch can change everything. You know, the beauty about Miguel Cotto's position, is he's his own boss, and he calls the shots. Whatever choice he makes, we support him 100%. But the big fight to make -- the biggest fight to make -- would be a Canelo Alvarez fight."

"Style-wise, it'll make an exciting fight. I don't think there would be one dull moment inside that squared circle. Miguel Cotto is a thinker, but he's a fighter. He comes forward intelligently. He picks his shots. But then again, he gets hit one time, and out the window with the strategy, and let's fight. And Alvarez just loves to fight. He's a technical type of -- not your typical Mexican, in-your-face type of warrior inside the squared circle. He likes to think a bit. But then again, he gets hit, let's fight. So if that fight ever happens, it would be amazing."

"It's premature to talk about because we have to get through Austin Trout. Miguel Cotto has his hands full on December 1st. It's not gonna be an easy fight. And then we'll, I'm sure, sit down with Miguel Cotto and his team and discuss further plans. ... He's his own boss, he has Miguel Cotto Promotions, and he's hired us to help him with any promoting that has to be done."
