Matchroom Boxing promoter Eddie Hearn announced this morning that he's finalized a deal for a fight between welterweights Lee Purdy and Carson Jones for December, with the exact date and venue to be determined. The fight is expected to land on December 8 or 15.
This fight might not get a lot of publicity out of the gate or even going into it, but it should be dynamite. Purdy (19-3-1, 12 KO) is great fun to watch fight, and is coming off of a four-round stoppage of Gumersindo Carrasco on September 8, which was a real hoot.
Jones (34-9-2, 24 KO) proved his value in a war against Kell Brook in July, losing a close decision.
Our own Oli Goldstein is even more excited than I am for this one, I think, calling it, "Two brilliant lunatics who are going to put a fight for the ages."
A win for Purdy would be a bit of an upset, in my view, but it's good, tough matchmaking, and it's nice to see Matchroom reward the American for coming over and putting on a fantastic show, too. Jones doesn't have a lot of major opportunities in the States, as he's not with a power promoter and doesn't have a sparkly record you can dress up for an HBO fight, but he's still a borderline top 10 welterweight, and I'd give him an honest, fair shot in fights against the likes of Paulie Malignaggi, Randall Bailey, Devon Alexander, Marcos Maidana, and plenty of other more well-known names.
There's not a lot more to say about this matchup, really. It's a good fight made with action and entertainment in mind. And that is plenty enough for me.
