The first two televised fights in Las Vegas for tonight's Showtime card are in the books, with veteran Ishe Smith and youngster Daquan Arnett winning their undercard bouts on Showtime Extreme.
Our live coverage of Matthysse vs Ajose continues here, with the main event plus J'Leon Love vs Ramon Valenzuela starting at 9 pm EDT on Showtime. Following that show, it's Ward vs Dawson and DeMarco vs Molina on HBO.
Here are the quick recaps of the early bouts:
Ishe Smith was dominant in a 10-round decision win over Irving Garcia, winning every round on two cards and scoring a knockdown in the first round. Garcia was competitive in the second round, but mostly Ishe was just too good for him. Smith, now 34 and trying to get that one big shot with Mayweather Promotions behind him, fought to knock Garcia out, but he's not a power puncher so it didn't quite work. He aimed to impress, and, well, he'd still probably be a tricky handful for a lot of good fighters at 154. Smith 24-5 (11), Garcia 17-8-3 (7).
19-year-old junior middleweight Daquan Arnett had no trouble with Jesus Tavera, stopping him in four rounds on the first telvised fight of the night when Tony Weeks mercifully ended things with Tavera reeling. Arnett 7-0 (5), Tavera 4-3 (1).
