Here's the entire, 44-second fight from last night's Ward vs Dawson undercard between WBC lightweight champ Antonio DeMarco and John Molina, courtesy Goossen Tutor:
I've seen a few say that they thought the stoppage was early, but I can't agree. Like I said in the post-fight Ward celebration thread, I just don't know what you can possibly expect a referee to do when a fighter is bent over, with his ass through the ropes, covering his head and taking shots, not responding to any of the action.
The referee's job is to protect the fighter, and Molina put himself in that position. There's no "stand 'em up" restart to be done. He was being beaten up, and it ended. I can't blame Jack Reiss for the call.
It's unfortunate for Molina, of course, but that's just the way the cookie crumbles sometimes. He's a fun fighter and tough guy who either got caught cold, or just got caught right. Some way or another, he got caught, and it was over before he ever had a chance to make his argument.
Molina (24-2, 19 KO) can fight his way back into contention and try it again, though. For DeMarco (28-2-1, 21 KO), this is an emphatic statement win -- and it also means he would be ready for a November 3 date with Adrien Broner, which he wants, and Broner says he wants. Here's hoping. I like that fight a lot.
