A fight between Top Rank welterweight prospects Jessie Vargas and Wale Omotoso is being discussed for the March 30 undercard of the HBO main event rematch between Brandon Rios and Mike Alvarado, according to Mike Coppinger at BoxingScene.com.
Vargas (21-0, 9 KO) came to Top Rank last year after leaving the Mayweather team, while Omotoso (23-0, 19 KO) signed with Top Rank in 2011. Both fighters have skeptics and supporters, and the matchup would be a proving ground, sort of a ShoBox-style fight between two guys hoping to get into the race at 147 pounds this year.
Omotoso, 27, has frankly struggled a bit since coming to the States, facing limited opposition and often having to work harder than expected to get the win. Vargas, 23, is the more well-known prospect, having been featured on Floyd Mayweather's pay-per-view undercards in the past.
Both fighters are still in the "prove it" stages of their careers, and the matchup is interesting for both if it does come together.
Rios-Alvarado II has not been finalized yet, but is expected to happen.
