Paulie Malignaggi doesn't want Shane Mosley, and that fight is off the table for real, it would appear. Malignaggi does want Marcos Maidana, and that fight also doesn't look likely to happen.
Richard Schaefer of Golden Boy Promotions tells BoxingScene.com that he's got ideas for those two to fight on April 27 in Brooklyn, but in separate bouts. Malignaggi would defend the WBA welterweight title against Andre Berto in an ex-DiBella showdown main event, while Maidana would take on countryman Lucas Matthysse, who fights this Saturday on Showtime against Mike Dallas Jr.
While Schaefer is right that Matthysse-Maidana is a mouth-watering fight for action reasons, one can't help but think Matthysse is on to something when he says that if Danny Garcia doesn't fight him next, he's being ducked by the WBC and WBA junior welterweight champ. Matthysse has plainly stated he's got no desire to move to 147 until he cleans out 140, and with Maidana now competing at 147, a catchweight is likely the only way that fight doesn't take place at welterweight.
Malignaggi-Berto is something to do with two guys Golden Boy appears to not know what to do with right now. They brought in Andre Berto, who promptly lost to Robert Guerrero in a great slugfest of a fight. Malignaggi, who holds the WBA welterweight belt, is seemingly floating without direction despite winning his recent fights, so much so that Schaefer's big plan for him was to face a shot, 41-year-old version of Shane Mosley.
What do you think about these fights? Is Golden Boy keeping Matthysse away from Danny Garcia? Does Malignaggi-Berto excite you much?
