WBC President Jose Sulaiman wants Chavez Jr. to dump Freddie Roach

The Chavez/Roach saga continues. Though it appeared Roach was set to be fired a while ago from the corner of Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., Roach has recently said that he is still "in the picture" when it comes to training Chavez. Now, one of the biggest supporters of the Chavez family is saying that he believes Chavez should indeed hire a new trainer.

According to Ernesto Castellanos of notfight.com, WBC president Jose Sulaiman wants Chavez to finally, once and for all, dump Freddie Roach and get a new trainer.

Here, via Boxing Scene, is an excerpt of what was reported:

Sulaiman says Roach focuses most of his attention on superstar Manny Pacquiao and "forgets about his other fighters." He said Chavez needs a coach who can spend necessary time grooming him. Amir Khan had a similar complaint when he left Roach to start training with VIrgil Hunter. Sulaiman also blamed the marijuana charge on a mishap in Chavez's camp and stated the following - "what happened is that a stupid assistant administered a drug containing marijuana and then he tested positive in the drug test."

One trainer mentioned to potentially train Chavez is Robert Garcia of Oxnard, California. Sulaiman said Garcia "is a very good caoch."

It goes without saying but this whole situation is a mess. One may wonder why Chavez would care at all about what Sulaiman thinks. The answer is that Sulaiman is very close to the Chavez family, and he can grant Chavez a title shot on a whim. Needless to say, Sulaiman is criticized heavily for his frequently ignorant remarks and shows of favoritism.

It's been rigorously documented that Chavez showed more interest in eating cereal in his underwear than seriously training to face Sergio Martinez. It's Chavez's training habits (or lack thereof) that are his real issue, regardless of who trains him.

I don't know who will train Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. for his next fight. But if I'm Freddie Roach I may just want to get the heck out of Dodge now while I still can.
