Mike Alvarado and Ruslan Provodnikov won't be canceling their fight or anything, but hometown hero Alvarado did come in one pound over the contracted limit today at the weigh-in, tipping the scales at 141 pounds for tomorrow night's HBO boxing main event. Provodnikov weighed in at 139.8 pounds and screamed a lot.
Alvarado (34-1, 23 KO) has two hours to lose the one pound, the biggest differences being that if he doesn't, he'll probably have to forfeit a portion of his purse to Provodnikov, and he won't be able to retain the interim 140-pound belt that he currently holds even if he wins the fight. Provodnikov (22-2, 15 KO) will be fighting for that belt either way.
No co-feature bouts will be televised tomorrow night on HBO, but Top Rank will stream the undercard on their site. It's a series of low-level club fights, really, local stuff meant to bring in more local fans, which there's nothing wrong with, of course, but the general boxing public doesn't have much to tune in for this time. Juan Diaz will be in action, though, as the former lightweight titlist weighed in at 135 pounds for his fight against Colorado club fighter Juan Santiago, who came in at 134½.
