Eleider Alvarez will take on Thomas Oosthuizen this coming January 18 in Montreal on the undercard of the Lucian Bute vs Jean Pascal fight at the Bell Centre. Oosthuizen will be moving up to light heavyweight for the fight.
Alvarez (13-0, 8 KO) is one of the hot prospects of the Quebec fight scene, a 29-year-old Colombian who has made Montreal his home. He's coming off of a decision win over former middleweight contender Edison Miranda in a fight that was contested at a 180-pound catchweight. He's been solid so far as a pro, and is looking to take a next step.
Oosthuizen (22-0-2, 13 KO) has seen his stock dip in his last two fights, drawing with Brandon Gonzales and escaping with a narrow win over Ezequiel Maderna in his native South Africa. Moving to light heavyweight will still see the 6'4" Oosthuizen have large height advantages over his foes. At 25, the lanky southpaw still has plenty of future left.
The fight will be for the interim WBA title, which is unnecessary, but this is boxing, so go with it.
