Lamont Peterson is still the IBF junior welterweight titleholder despite being bulldozed by Lucas Matthysse in his last fight, which was a non-title catchweight bout, and now has 90 days to defend his belt against mandatory challenger Dierry Jean. Peterson's promoters at Golden Boy won a purse bid for the fight with a bid of $156,000. Jean's Montreal-based management Eye of the Tiger bid $111,121.
With such a low bid winning the bout, Golden Boy will have options for this fight. They could put it on a major show's undercard, or it could be a nice headline bout on their FOX Sports 1 series, which debuted to much (well, relatively speaking) fanfare and has quickly become just another second-rate boxing series, lacking in notable fights that make fans want to tune in.
Peterson (31-2-1, 16 KO) is still one of the better fighters in the world at 140 pounds, and would have to be the favorite in this matchup. Jean (25-0, 17 KO) is a 31-year-old Haitian based in Montreal now, who earned the title shot in May with a win over Cleotis Pendarvis in Oklahoma.
