It looks like one of boxing's hardest punchers will be making his return next spring. Lucas Matthysse, once heralded by many as a god of boxing, will likely be making his comeback in March according to a report by Boxing Scene's Rick Reeno. No opponent has been named or anything, but apparently Lucas and his team are going to discuss things with Golden Boy over the next few weeks and go from there.
Can't say that I'm not excited to see Matthysse get back in the ring. He came back down to Earth a bit with his loss to Garcia, but he is still an insanely fun guy to watch whether he wins or loses. Can never go wrong with a puncher, and that's what he is.
The natural question is who will he fight? As disappointing as it would be, it could be a "Get Well" type of fight. Like when the WWE builds up a monster character so they have him squash inferior opposition for weeks on end until you have forgotten he's really just a stiff who is big and can't wrestle. Matthysse isn't a stiff, but you get the idea.
Or maybe it would be against someone good. The winners of next month's Zab Judah/Paulie Malignaggi or Adrien Broner/Marcos Maidana fights would be good places to start, notably the latter. There's always the possibility he could move up and try to avenge his controversial loss to Devon Alexander as well. Speaking of rematches, I wouldn't doubt if he has one with Garcia at some point, especially when the Golden Boy/Top Rank feud keeps the opponent pool more shallow than it should be.
Who would you like to see him against?
