Welcome to another results column. Check out what you might have missed the last time around here. I'm getting this out later than usual so I'll spare you the pre-cap chit-chat.

Manuel Avila TKO2 Jose Angel Cota
Cota hadn't won a fight since 2008 and had been knocked out 4 times since then, but this was the main event. What a shocker of a finish!!! Super bantamweight Avila improved to 13-0 and picked up his 5th KO.
Paul Mendez D10 Louis Rose
This was a close fight but most thought Rose won. I was too disinterested to score it, but I suppose ruling it a draw was fair.

Alexander Petkovic KO4 Chupaki Chipindi
Global Boxing Union heavyweight title
Juan Carlos Gomez TKO2 Adnan Buharalija
James Chereji TKO2 Belmin Skomorac
This might be the greatest knockdown I've seen all year. If Skomorac didn't magically get up before 10 I'd say it was a front runner for KOTY. Both fighters threw lead right hands but Chereji's got off first.
Shefat Isufi RTD4 Vasile Dragomir
Dragomir injued his left arm and quit in his corner "after the end" of round 4. There were 41 seconds left on the Eurosport clock when the 4th round was declared over. Dragomir tried to quit in his corner the round before that but was talked out of it.

Ana Julaton MD10 Perla Hernandez (97-93?, 98-94?, 95-95?)
Former world champion Julaton didn't look her vintage self but got back into the win column without controversy, despite one judge's opinion. It was usually a slow pace chess match but Julaton would suddenly make 2 or 3 moves for every 1 Hernandez offered back. And Hernandez's accuracy was not good enough to make up for her inactivity. Thus Julaton picked up her first win in over a year. But unfortunately a clash of heads opened a cut outside of her right eye and she should probably stay out of the ring for a while to let it fully heal.
However, she's so hungry to get back on top she'd probably take a rematch with Yesica Marcos in December if it was on the table... Marcos is rumored to be making a comeback by then after being inactive since a "draw" with Marcela Acuna in January.
Oh yea, there's one other thing. The fight was announced without scorecards as a split decision. I got the listed majority decision scores from BoxRec.
Luis Solis TKO6 Orlando Perez
Perez injured his leg in the 5th round and the ref ruled him unfit to continue at the start of the 6th.
Uriel Cauich Frias SD6 Sergio Santos
Milos Pantelic KO1 Heriberto Gutierrez
This whole fight was a little suspect to me. So I made a highlight video for it (above). Was the knockout legit or did Gutierrez throw the fight?

Youri Kayembre Kalenga TKO2 George Tevdorashvili
Good rebound by Kalenga, who was coming off his only career defeat (where he was robbed by Arturs Kulikauskis). Kalenga is already the best cruiserweight in France and could be the best in Europe in years to come. Or his stamina will fail him... We'll see.

Emiliano Marsili (T?)KO3 David Kis
Lightweight contender Marsili made short work of Kis. He needs to hurry up and make a run at world championship level fighters before he's 40. Or maybe he'd just like to retire undefeated with Derry Mathews being the best name on his resume...

Ryo Akaho TKO6 Jecker Buhawe
Former world title challenger Akaho was given a tough fight but rose to the occasion. After the Kamedas, Yamanaka, and Iwasa, he might be the next best bantamweight in Japan.

2013-11-02 Auditorio General Arteaga, Queretaro, Queretaro, Mexico
Televisa (Mexico) / Fox Deportes & Sports Espanol (USA)
Andres Gutierrez UD12 Ernie Sanchez (no scorecards announced)
Gutierrez advanced to 28-0-1 and defended his WBC Silver super bantamweight title. I suppose the cards were so wide that they didn't feel a need to announce them. Fox Sports 2 had it a shutout.
Jessica Gonzalez SD10 Yazmin Rivas (92-98, 96-94, 96-95)
From the opening bell 2 things were clear. First, Rivas clearly had the deeper skill set. Second, Gonzalez was taller and would try her best to use her length to her advantage. Gonzalez let her hands go and continuously caught Rivas on the way in. And when Rivas did get inside, Gonzalez tied her up. Most rounds in the fight could have gone either way. Open scoring revealed the fight was a draw after 4 and 8 rounds. Fox Deportes and I had Rivas winning, but obviously 2 of the 3 judges disagreed. I thought Gonzalez should have lost at least 1 point for holding too.
In any event Gonzalez walks away with back to back wins over world champions and now holds the interim WBC female bantamweight title. Not bad for a girl with a 4-1 official record.
Irma Garcia MD10 Magali Rodriguez (96-94, 95-95, 97-95)
Despite the scorecards Garcia definitely gave Rodriguez a boxing lesson. Still, Rodriguez has a lot of valuable experience for a 21 year old and I expect to see her in more world title fights soon. She'll win some too. But on this day Garcia retained her WBA female bantamweight title.
Although this happened all of the time back before there was colored television, Garcia is one of the few fighters today to lose in their division between world title defenses. You don't actually have to defend your title every time you fight if you fight often enough. Garcia went 3-1 for the year but is 3-0 in title fights.
Ariel Gonzalez TKO4 Jose Javier Regalado

2013-11-02 Centro de Usos Multiples, Hermosillo, Sonora, Mexico
Azteca 7 (Mexico) / UniMas & Azteca America (USA)
Giovani Segura TKO12 Hernan Marquez
Coming into the fight the odds favored Marquez. He was younger, fresher, and the more established flyweight. But he was also not used to fighting guys that could walk through his firepower. There's a reason they call Marquez "Tyson." But he simply was unable to physically impose himself from the opening bell. Consequently before he ever got started, he was doomed.
Nonetheless fans got to witness a war for as long as it lasted. Marquez even won a few rounds too. Overall the shorter, more classical punches came from Marquez. He could out box Segura as long as he wasn't trapped, winded, or hurt. But Segura's pressure and output was simply too much too bear. Plus Marquez isn't known to be fleet of foot. He really never had a need to be before.
After getting rocked in the opening round Marquez came back strong in rounds 2 and 3 but took a knee in round 4. Round 5 saw Segura start and finish strong with a great rally from Marquez in the middle. From there on Segura pretty much took over (Marquez would later admit that he felt very weak from the 6th round onward). Marquez still had great moments but he couldn't sustain them and was ultimately bullied around the ring. Marquez was resigned to the roll of a counter puncher, and that's hardly his preferred style of fighting. By the 11th round he was pretty low on gas and went down again (this time not on his own accord). Segura then finished him off in the 12th with a left hook (which sounds ordinary but not when you factor in that both guys are southpaw).
To Marquez's credit and detriment I never recall him clinching. Had he mastered the "art" like a Bernard Hopkins or Andre Ward he could have won the fight, but it wouldn't have been nearly as entertaining otherwise. But he also wouldn't have got knocked out and carried out on a stretcher... In this blood sport, for everything positive fans love to laud there will always be cons they would rather ignore. Violence comes at a price. Even if you fake it (like in pro wrestling) athletes can still die.
Fortunately Marquez appears to be healthy after his brief hospitalization due to dehydration. Apparently he had a heat stroke. Dehydration is probably the most dangerous thing about boxing. When you're dehydrated the chances of permanent brain injury go up enormously. Human beings were not meant to fight 36 minutes (12x3 minute rounds). How can anyone expect to not suffer from dehydration if they're going life and death for all 36 minutes in a non-stop all-action war?
But I digress. I'm hung up on recent tragedies in the sport. Let's just move on to the next fight...

Joselyn Arroyo Ruiz UD6 Maria Guadalupe Guzman

2013-11-02 Ice Arena, Hull, Yorkshire, United Kingdom
Sky Sports
Tommy Coyle TKO7 John Simpson
Vacant IBF International lightweight title
Luke Campbell TKO5 Lee Connelly
2012 Olympic Gold Medalist Campbell picked up his 3rd career win (all by TKO).
Lucas Browne TKO5 Richard Towers
In the most relevant fight on the card rising heavyweight contender Browne took his final step to a Commonwealth heavyweight title shot with a 5 round destruction of Towers. Towers showed good boxing skills early but folded once he felt Browne's power. Browne remains unbeaten and has stopped 16 of his 18 opponents. Although Browne should be fighting Commonwealth champion David Price next, my guess is the price won't be right... The 2008 Olympic Bronze medalist needs rehab, not another knockout loss.
Josh Warrington TKO12 Samir Mouneimne
Mouneimne began the fight showing off and finished it out on his feet. Warrington stuck to the basics and picked up the vacant Commonwealth (British Empire) featherweight title. He's now 16-0.
Curtis Woodhouse PTS6 Lewis van Poetsch
Rendall Munroe PTS6 Pavels Senkovs

If a bout is not mentioned which took place on one of the above cards it’s most likely because I haven’t got around to watching it yet. In the event that I do watch such a bout at a later time it’s still unlikely I will update this results column. My columns will be posted once a week, devoted to cards that most casual American boxing fans haven’t seen or heard of. For available footage of the previously reported bouts follow @sweetboxing on twitter. You may also email the author of this piece at rgbivins@gmail.com.
