Undefeated WBO super featherweight titlist Mikey Garcia will return on January 25 against Juan Carlos Burgos in an HBO Boxing After Dark main event, with Bryant Jennings and Artur Szpilka set for a heavyweight co-feature.
Garcia (33-0, 28 KO) won the 130-pound belt on November 9 against Rocky Martinez, his second title victory of 2013. In January of this year, he beat Orlando Salido for the WBO featherweight title, but lost that belt on the scales in June before knocking out Juan Manuel Lopez.
Burgos (30-1-2, 20 KO) is a good fighter, but will be the obvious underdog. On the Salido-Garcia card in January, Burgos got unlucky with a draw against Martinez in a fight many believed he won, but he followed that in July with another draw against Yakubu Amidu. With fairness to Burgos, that fight was at 135 pounds and Amidu was a short-notice opponent. That was also an outdoor fight, with oppressive heat affecting the fighters on the ESPN Friday Night Fights show.
Jennings (17-0, 9 KO) recently left Main Events to sign with Gary Shaw Productions. The unbeaten American heavyweight was showcased frequently on Main Events' NBC Sports series, and they tried to get him an HBO fight, but it didn't come about. Jennings' signing with Shaw is in some ways a sideways step at best, but with Top Rank working frequently with promoters like Shaw and Lou DiBella, it does give Jennings what seems an easier in for HBO fights. Or maybe that's just the way it seems. Anyway, he's got what he wants. Jennings hasn't fought since June, when he dominated Andrey Fedosov. It was Jennings' only fight of 2013.
Szpilka (16-0, 12 KO) is a tough, aggressive Polish prospect with a pair of exciting wins over Mike Mollo in Chicago on ESPN2 his most notable fights, or at least most noted. He also has wins over veterans Brian Minto, Owen Beck, Jameel McCline, and Taras Bidenko.
The fights will be held at The Theater at Madison Square Garden.
