Abner Mares wanted an immediate rematch to the first loss of his professional boxing career and now he is getting it. According to Golden Boy's twitter account, the rematch between Mares and his conqueror Jhonny Gonzalez is officially set for February 15. The fight will take place at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, and it's safe to assume it will be televised by Showtime.
Can't say that this is surprising. We knew that Mares would want revenge after being stopped in the first round when Gonzalez landed a sweet feint-hook combination. Mares dropped his hands when he thought Gonzalez was going downstairs only to receive a nasty surprise when his opponent brought his hook back up and slammed it into his face. A testament to his toughness, Mares regained his feet and made an attempt to fight back, but the fight was stopped soon after and Gonzalez was awarded his old WBC featherweight title.
The rematch makes sense for both parties as Mares wants revenge and Gonzalez will surely receive a handsome payday. Can't imagine the rematch being a bad fight due to Gonzalez's punch and Mares' stubborness, which will likely be doubled in his attempt to gain revenge on the one man to defeat him. Count me in for this one.
