Devon Alexander is experiencing the most attention of his boxing career this week, following Floyd Mayweather tossing his name into the May 4 mix, and trainer Kevin Cunningham has finally spoken up, as he so often does, telling BoxingScene.com that Devon can win the fight and shock the world, if it happens.
Cunningham brought up another famous upset in St. Louis boxing history:
"History always repeats itself. In 1978, a fighter from St. Louis named Leon Spinks got the opportunity to fight the best fighter in the world, Muhammad Ali. Nobody gave Spinks a chance and we all saw what happened. Leon shocked the world and that is exactly what's going to happen if Devon gets the opportunity to fight Mayweather."
Alexander (24-1, 13 KO) was due to face Kell Brook, but that's now in limbo with the Mayweather talk. Most still seem to feel that Robert Guerrero will wind up getting the call to face Mayweather, as has been expected, but this has definitely made things a bit more interesting for the time being.
Would Alexander have any chance at pulling an upset that would stun not just the boxing world, but the sports world as a whole? Does he match up better than Guerrero does?
