According to multiple sources, welterweight contender Andre Berto has decided to part ways with trainer Tony Morgan after losing two of his last three fights. Berto has been trained by Morgan his entire career so, naturally, this was a major decision on Berto's part.
Here is what Berto had to say about splitting from Morgan:
"Tony and I had a great ride together from the amateurs to two professional world championships, and he will always be a very important person in my life. He taught me a lot, and I am grateful to him for that, but this is a decision I had to make at this point in my career."
Nobody has been named Berto's new trainer at this stage. Berto is from Florida, but now resides in Los Angeles so he may be pursuing a trainer on the west coast. He does not have a fight currently scheduled, so it is not imperative he find someone in the next few days or anything.
This decision comes on the heels of a decision loss to Robert Guerrero that was a very rough, inside fight. Berto was dropped twice early and had both eyes swollen shut by the later rounds. What has to be most disgusting to Berto, however, is the fact that Guerrero has received a shot at superstar Floyd Mayweather Jr. Coincidentally, Victor Ortiz also got a shot at Mayweather after beating Berto two years ago.
Hopefully, Berto can find a new trainer to advance his career. He may be flawed, but he has been one of the most consistently exciting fighters over the past few years. His bouts with Ortiz and Guerrero were each candidates for Fight of the Year in 2011 and 2012, respectively.
