According to ESPN.com's Dan Rafael's twitter account, Richard Schaefer told him he has a deal made for the proposed fight between Lucas Matthysse and Lamont Peterson for May 18. The fight will be the main event of a card in Atlantic City that will feature Devon Alexander defending his belt against England's Kell Brook on the undercard. Showtime will televise the show.
This match had been in the works for some time now, and it is finally coming to fruition. It's a genuinely great matchup that features two of the top junior welterweights in the world (many consider Matthysse to be the top junior welterweight) squaring off with each other in what should be an all-action fight. Assuming Danny Garcia gets by Zab Judah (I feel that is a fairly safe assumption), it would be great if he were to face the winner. All three are promoted by Golden Boy so the Cold War would not be an issue here.
This is just a tremendous two-fight card by Golden Boy and Showtime. Hopefully the competition between themselves and Top Rank/HBO will breed more high-quality shows like this one. The boxing schedule over the next few months is more loaded than you uncle on Thanksgiving. Enjoy it.
