WBC light heavyweight titleholder Chad Dawson will return to the ring on June 8, traveling to Montreal to defend against dangerous puncher Adonis Stevenson. HBO will televise.
Dawson (31-2, 17 KO) is coming off of a bad loss at super middleweight to Andre Ward last September, after which he parted ways a second time with trainer John Scully, rehiring Eddie Mustafa Muhammad earlier this year. The 30-year-old Dawson was expected to rematch Jean Pascal this spring, but that was scrapped when Pascal came to an agreement to instead face Lucian Bute.
Stevenson (20-1, 17 KO) had fought his way into a mandatory position for the IBF 168-pound title, held by Carl Froch. That title is tied up right now, as Froch is set to face Mikkel Kessler on May 25, so Stevenson is instead moving up for a big fight, which is a worthwhile risk, as he's 35 now, and it would seem that Dawson, whose confidence is questioned by many, would perhaps be vulnerable enough for Stevenson to make a move. Stevenson has, at worst, a puncher's chance in this matchup, and Dawson's ability to bounce back from a pretty demoralizing loss will play a huge factor in the outcome, too.
How do you think this fight turns out? Will Dawson rebound and be able to outbox Stevenson, or will the southpaw bomber crack Dawson's chin and potentially fragile psyche?
