Ricky Hatton is selling confidence in a Martin Murray upset over Sergio Martinez on April 27 in Argentina, which will air live on HBO and BoxNation, and says that if it goes down that way, it will be bigger than his own win over Kostya Tszyu back in 2005.
"Martinez was rocked all over the place in his last fight against Chavez Jr. and he's 38 years old. Martin has really come into his own the past couple of years and, to be honest, I think if he can pull this off it will go down as one of the best wins by a British fighter in history.
"When I beat Kostya Tsyzu he was ranked number two pound-for-pound in the world and I think most people have Martinez at number three. The difference is though that Martin's going away from home for this fight, so if he wins, I think it'll be bigger than my fight with Tsyzu."
Murray (25-0-1, 11 KO) is a massive underdog against Martinez (50-2-2, 28 KO), but Hatton's right that Sergio is getting older, and don't forget that Martinez is also coming off of knee surgery, too. It wasn't a major surgery, but any knee surgery at 38 is at least kind of a big deal, and if Murray can get some pressure on Sergio and make him uncomfortable early, it could get interesting.
That said, everyone is going to pick Sergio, because he should win. That's just reality. But it's nice to be imaginative. Don't let go of your imagination, you guys. Life tips.
