Gabe Montoya has reported on Twitter that junior middleweight contenders Alfredo Angulo and Erislandy Lara will face each other on the undercard of the Marcos Maidana - Josesito Lopez main event on June 8. The card takes place at the Home Depot Center in Carson, California and will be televised by Showtime.
Lara is coming off a draw with Vanes Martirosyan, which was a WBC title eliminator. There had been talks of a possible rematch, but it did not come to fruition (and, really, I don't think anyone was excited about the potential of watching them go at it again anyways). Angulo has won two straight by KO since he suffered a stoppage loss to James Kirkland in 2011. His last fight, against Jorge Silva, ended up an unexpected brawl and Angulo had to settle for a unanimous decision despite desperately trying to knock his opponent out.
At first glance this would seem to be a very difficult matchup for Angulo. We know that Lara is not going to stand in front of him. He is a (Cuban!) southpaw that is at his best when he is in counterpunching mode, which we would have to figure he would be for this fight.
What do you guys think? Even matchup? Or does it put Angulo in a very tough spot, especially when they appeared to be bringing him back slowly after his stint away from the ring after the Kirklnad loss and immigration issues?
