Today at 4 pm EDT on Sky Sports in the UK and WealthTV in the US, Tony Bellew and Isaac Chilemba headline a Matchroom Boxing show from the Echo Arena in Liverpool, in a matchup that could determine a WBC light heavyweight title challenger for later this year. US viewers can stream the fight on WealthTV.com.
Bellew (19-1, 12 KO) figures to be the favorite, as he's got home field advantage and has been on a solid roll, with only a close loss to Nathan Cleverly as a pro. Chilemba (20-1-1, 9 KO) is a talented fighter in his own right, born in Malawi, fighting out of South Africa, and looking to make his mark on the 175-pound division.
In some ways, this can be seen as a 50-50 fight, but home field for Bellew is big if it goes to the cards, as most expect it will. They do have a common opponent in gatekeeper Edison Miranda. Bellew dominated Miranda and stopped him in nine rounds last September. One fight prior to that, Miranda lost a 10-round decision to Chilemba on ESPN Friday Night Fights.
The co-feature may be the must-see fight here, though, as good as the main event is on paper. Derry Mathews (32-8-1, 17 KO) upset Anthony Crolla (25-4, 9 KO) last April in a British Fight of the Year contender, and will look to score another win with the vacant Commonwealth lightweight title on the line. Mathews is still a little dangerous in there, as Crolla found out last year, but both are settled in as domestic talents. That said, they fight hard, and it should be another good one.
