Nonito Donaire to undergo shoulder surgery following loss to Rigondeaux

Nonito Donaire will have surgery on his ailing right shoulder, which the Filipino fighter said last night had needed surgery for a while now, following his loss to Guillermo Rigondeaux in New York.

Nonito Donaire revealed that he would undergo surgery on his right shoulder after his unanimous decision defeat to Guillermo Rigondeaux on Saturday night for the junior featherweight world championship.

"[The shoulder] hasn't been feeling good for a while, so I'm going to get surgery on it, take some time off to be with Rachel and the baby, and then get back in the ring after that," said Donaire, whose wife Rachel is pregnant with their first child, a boy they plan to name Jarel.

I suppose the good news here is that Donaire (31-2, 20 KO) was already planning to take time off to be with his wife and son in the coming months, so the surgery won't likely cost him any time he hadn't already intended to take off following a busy, four-fight 2012.

Donaire's vision was also obstructed in the final round, if not before, when Rigondeaux crushed him with a left hand to Donaire's right eye, immediately followed by Donaire pawing at and covering the eye with his glove for the remainder of the fight. Whether or not that injury requires real attention hasn't been addressed.
