Omar Figueroa has been known as a "fun" lightweight prospect for a while now. Tonight, after knocking out fellow unbeaten prospect Abner Cotto in the first round, he has arrived as someone you need to keep a serious eye on at 135 pounds.
Figueroa (21-0-1, 17 KO) was an offensive tornado tonight, rushing right at Cotto (16-1, 7 KO) from the outset, and Cotto simply could not handle the pressure. Cotto went down once from the pressure after a body shot hurt him, and not long after that, he was down on another body shot, and this time he could not beat the count. Miguel Cotto's second cousin just wasn't ready for this sort of fire from Figueroa, and it was readily apparent very quickly.
The 23-year-old Figueroa, a big and strong lightweight, could become a serious contender soon if what he's done so far in his career is any indication. It's a somewhat weak division right now, and ripe for the picking for a hungry, young fighter like this.
