Floyd Mayweather isn't looking past Robert Guerrero, he says, but he does still plan to fight on September 14, a hot fight date, of course, due to it being Mexican Independence weekend, which along with the upcoming Cinco De Mayo weekend, is a traditional huge fight Saturday for the sport.
Mayweather (43-0, 26 KO) could win or lose against Guerrero (31-1-1, 18 KO) and still fight on September 14, as a loss would simply mean holding the rematch on that weekend. Another possibility is Mayweather facing Canelo Alvarez, a fight that is hot on the minds of many following Alvarez's win over Austin Trout on April 20, which was held in front of just about 40,000 fans at the Alamodome in Texas, resulting in a $2.77 million gate, which is huge outside of Vegas in today's world.
There are other scenarios, of course. There has been talk of Amir Khan fighting Mayweather, but Khan won't fight until December. There is also a chance he could face Devon Alexander, who holds the IBF title and is a Golden Boy fighter. Danny Garcia has said he has one more fight at 140 before going to welterweight, but I'm sure a Floyd fight, if possibly offered, would move him up sooner.
There is still a lot of doubt that Mayweather will fight on September 14, since he hasn't fought twice in such a short time period in years. If he does, though, that would cancel Top Rank and HBO's plan to run Juan Manuel Marquez vs Timothy Bradley on the same night. Bob Arum has made clear he wouldn't run against Mayweather if he does fight on the date, but it was smart to reserve the Thomas & Mack Center in Vegas if he doesn't -- they could run against something like Canelo vs Miguel Cotto, just for instance, though someone would have to run off pay-per-view.
