Mayweather vs Guerrero: Roger talks Saturday's fight, Floyd Sr, Canelo, and more

Roger Mayweather weighs in on Floyd Mayweather's training camp, his reuniting with his father, Robert Guerrero, Canelo Alvarez, and more.

Marcos Villegas, The Boxing Channel

How's training camp been going? We haven't been hearing too much, but how's Floyd looking, and what kind of work have you been doing with him?

Roger Mayweather

Floyd's doing well. He's been very busy. He throws a lot of punches. Floyd's sharp, actually. He's very sharp, even with the layoff that he had. He's very sharp. He had good sparring. He had good guys to spar with. I think he's gonna be prepared. I think he's gonna be that much sharper.

Marcos Villegas

Looking at Robert Guerrero as an opponent, do you feel there's something that Floyd hasn't seen before?

Roger Mayweather

I don't think so. Floyd's been boxing all his life, so in terms of him seeing something that somebody else never done, I ain't seen it happen. Floyd done fought every fight that's out there. Name-wise, as far as skill-wise go, he done fought all those guys. The guys that he's been working with are very sharp. I've seen what he does to them. So I can't see what he won't do to Guerrero, because I don't think he's much better than the guys that Floyd's been working with.

Marcos Villegas

Guerrero mentioned to us that he feels he's the strongest mentally that Floyd has faced, given what happened with his wife and the stuff he's gone through.

Roger Mayweather

Oh yeah? I ain't never seen a motherfucker, 'cause he believes what he believes, don't mean anything. The whole thing is boxing. Boxing is about what you know. A person can say anything he wants, but until you get up in here, and face the one that you believe can't beat you. He already know one thing, Floyd ain't never been beat. Floyd beat every guy that's out there. I don't think that (Guerrero) even believes he can beat Floyd. I mean, I seen him fight some other guys, but I don't think he believes what he say. If he do, that's OK, but I don't believe it. And Floyd's gonna make him not believe it, because that's what he does.

Marcos Villegas

What's it like having your brother back working with Floyd, and how's that dynamic between you and Floyd Sr?

Roger Mayweather

It don't bother me. His dad's back, don't bother me.

Marcos Villegas

Does it make you happy that he's back in camp?

Roger Mayweather

Why would it make me happy?

Marcos Villegas

It's a father and son reunited and all that.

Roger Mayweather

Yeah, but why would it make me happy? It don't make me happy one way or another. I been training Floyd for 15, going on 16 years. It don't bother me. My thing is that he performs, and that's basically what it's about. That Floyd performs and that he gives a good performance so the people can understand that he's still the best guy in the game.

Marcos Villegas

Speaking of performance, looking at Floyd, he looks in excellent shape. At 36, it seems the older Floyd has gotten, the better physically he looks. You seeing him and being in there with him, how long do you feel he can still compete at this high level?

Roger Mayweather

The thing with Floyd, Floyd will be able box -- Floyd will actually be able to box when he's 40 years old if he wants to. Floyd understands about boxing. He understands how not to get hurt. He understands what he needs to do. I don't think he'll fight that long, but he can fight that long. Floyd will still have skills at 40 years old to be able to beat most of the guys out there in boxing. Even though he's up in age.

Marcos Villegas

I know a lot's been made about your health, how are you doing now? Can you give us an update?

Roger Mayweather

I'm fine. I mean, I don't know why so much got on about my health, about this, about that. I've been training him all this time, but my health supposedly deteriorated, last time I checked. It is what it is. My thing is keep my health and do what I need to do, to stay healthy. I'm a diabetic. You know how many people are a diabetic in the United States? Over 300 million (Editor's Note: No.). I'm not the first guy to be a diabetic, I'm not the last guy to be a diabetic. What's wrong with me? I'm a diabetic, too. Don't mean because I'm a diabetic, I can't take care of my kids. Or because I'm a diabetic, I can't eat the right things, or this or that. It is what it is. People say what they want.

Marcos Villegas

I know Canelo wanted to fight your nephew in September. What do you feel about Canelo? Do you feel he's a good fighter, do you feel he'd be competitive with Floyd?

Roger Mayweather

He's a good fighter. I've seen him fight more than once. I'm sure some time, at some point, that him and Floyd will fight. I don't know when, but hopefully that fight will happen.

Marcos Villegas

That seems to be the new Mayweather-Pacquiao. A lot of fans want Canelo and your nephew.

Roger Mayweather

If that fight happens, then Floyd's got to get ready for it. That's all there is to it. Then we'll see if he can do what he says he can do against Floyd. We've got to see it. Until that time comes, if they make the fight, we're all good.
