Danny Garcia to return September 7, possibly against Peterson-Matthysse winner

Danny Garcia's next fight will be held on September 7, and Golden Boy hopes it will be against the Lamont Peterson vs Lucas Matthysse winner.

USA TODAY Sports

Danny Garcia will return to the ring on September 7, likely on the east coast but potentially in Vegas, and Golden Boy is hoping that he'll face the winner of the May 18 fight between Lamont Peterson and Lucas Matthysse.

Here's what Richard Schaefer told BoxingScene.com:

"I would like for him to fight the winner of Lucas Matthysse and Lamont Peterson. This fight will be the lead-in to our big pay-per-view on September 14th. We want to have a big fight the week before the pay-per-view."

Garcia (26-0, 16 KO) is coming off of an April 27 win over Zab Judah, in a good, competitive fight. Matthysse (33-2, 31 KO) and Peterson (31-1-1, 16 KO) are both in their prime, which Judah is not, and could present some greater difficulty for Garcia, if the fight actually happens.

Garcia says he wants to fight at 140 one more time, then make the move up to welterweight. If he winds up fighting Peterson, it will unify the WBC, WBA, and IBF titles, though the IBF belt is not on the line on May 18, as the fight will be held at a 141-pound catchweight so that Matthysse can maintain his interim WBC belt (which shouldn't exist) and his mandatory challenger status.
