Ponce De Leon vs Mares results: Abner Mares stops Ponce De Leon in nine to win WBC title

Abner Mares dropped Daniel Ponce De Leon twice, and stopped him in the ninth round, though the decision to stop the fight by referee Jay Nady was questionable.

Al Bello

Abner Mares scored a ninth round stoppage of Daniel Ponce De Leon tonight to win a world title at featherweight, though the stoppage by referee Jay Nady was questionable.

Mares (26-0-1, 14 KO) put Ponce De Leon (44-5, 35 KO) down in the second round, but Ponce De Leon made it a fight the rest of the way. The younger Mares did land the more accurate blows, but Ponce De Leon kept himself in the fight. Mares said after the fight that Ponce De Leon did not hurt him in the fight, and Mares definitely turned Ponce De Leon into a one-dimensional, left-handed slugger again.

In the ninth, Mares put Ponce De Leon hard, but the veteran got back to his feet and fought on. With his hands up, and throwing punches back, Ponce De Leon was stopped by Jay Nady. Personally, the hook was pulled early, in my estimation. Ponce De Leon agreed after the bout, and was protesting as soon as the call was made.
