Floyd Mayweather: 'I'm not going to rush' on September 14, Canelo decision

Will Floyd Mayweather fight Canelo Alvarez? Maybe, but the seed has already been planted for that fight to not take place on September 14, when both fighters are supposedly scheduled to return to the ring.

Mayweather (44-0, 26 KO) routed Robert Guerrero last night in Las Vegas in his Showtime PPV debut, while Alvarez (42-0-1, 30 KO) decisioned Austin Trout on April 20 in San Antonio, in front of 40,000 fans at the Alamodome. There's no doubt that right now, this is probably the big-money fight in the sport, and would do huge numbers in Las Vegas and on pay-per-view. It's also a fight with the classic "legendary veteran vs rising superstar" storyline, and I think Canelo can be sold quite nicely as a legitimate threat to Mayweather's undefeated record.

But Floyd, who has said he'll fight on September 14 many times, sounds like he's not exactly dying to make this fight just yet:

"I feel like I'm in a postition to take some time off, talk it over with Al Haymon, talk it over with my father, Leonard [Ellerbe] and the rest of my team, and see what we come up with. I'm not going to duck or dodge anyone but I'm at the pinnacle or my sport and I've earned my stripes. I worked hard for 17 years to get to this point. I'm not going to rush."

Mayweather, 36, also hurt his right hand in last night's win over Guerrero, which would be a legitimate, but still convenient, reason to pass on the September date. Golden Boy is adamant that they will run on that date, with or without Mayweather, as Canelo would then take the main event against, perhaps, Miguel Cotto, or another contender at 154 pounds.

If Golden Boy runs a Canelo pay-per-view from the MGM Grand with Showtime, you can expect Bob Arum and Top Rank to scrap plans to hold Marquez-Bradley that night at the Thomas & Mack Center. They're going to want to juice that fight for whatever PPV numbers it can bring in, because it's too expensive to run on regular HBO, probably. Or, if Showtime goes with Canelo off-PPV (which at this point probably doesn't make business sense, unfortunately for those of you who hate spending more money on PPV), then HBO PPV could still run, and we'd have another head-to-head like last September's Chavez-Martinez vs Canelo-Lopez battle in Vegas.

That all remains to be figured out and jockeyed over by the promoters and networks. If Mayweather does surprise a lot of us and fight on September 14, HBO and Top Rank absolutely won't run Marquez-Bradley against his fight. There's just no point, and Arum, at least, has openly said that in the past.
