Leo Santa Cruz looks like he'll get his shot at a second world title, this time at 122 pounds, as Golden Boy Promotions won the purse bid for his ordered shot at titleholder Victor Terrazas, outbidding Zanfer.
GBP bid $526,000 for the fight, beating out Zanfer's bid of $451,000. The fight likely would not have happened if Zanfer had won the bid, as they have generally worked exclusively with Top Rank in the States, and Golden Boy may have been loathe to send Santa Cruz down to Mexico on a Zanfer-promoted bill.
One spot where this fight could work out great is the Mayweather-Canelo undercard on September 14. It's not an expensive fight, doesn't fit as a Showtime headliner (I mean, it would be a good one, but they'd probably rather have better main events than this, Berto vs Soto Karass aside), and it would make the 9/14 PPV even more attractive, given that Santa Cruz has quickly built up a big fan base among diehards.
Terrazas (37-2-1, 21 KO) beat Cristian Mijares for the vacant title on April 20 in Mexico City, a somewhat controversial split decision. Santa Cruz (24-0-1, 14 KO) fought on May 4, wiping out an aged Alexander Munoz on the Mayweather-Guerrero show.
