Chavez vs Vera fight moving to September 7 at Staples Center

Julio Cesar Chavez Jr's ring return has been pushed back again, this time to September 7 against Brian Vera at the Staples Center.

Julio Cesar Chavez Jr was supposed to return in June, then it was August 3. Now, Chavez will reportedly be facing Brian Vera on September 7 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, which could put the HBO-televised fight head-to-head with a Danny Garcia vs Lucas Matthysse fight on Showtime that night.

Chavez (46-1-1, 32 KO) hasn't fought since last September, when he lost a wide decision to Sergio Martinez, a fight that is memorable mostly for an insane final round in which Chavez nearly knocked out his opponent, the only round of the fight that he won. He was then suspended by the Nevada State Athletic Commission for a failed drug test, testing positive for marijuana.

The nine-month suspension was officially up a few days ago, but the 27-year-old Mexican star has had his comeback fight delayed. It was also originally said to be set for Mexico City, which appears to also be out now with the move to Los Angeles.

Vera (23-6, 14 KO) is a tough gatekeeper sort of fighter, the type of guy Chavez has beaten several times over. He never comes with any intention other than a win, but while Chavez-Vera does promise action on paper, it's also probably seen by most as a fairly soft return for JCC Jr. The fight is also likely to take place at a catchweight between middleweight and super middleweight, making it easier for Chavez to return from his layoff without having to boil down all the way to 160.
