Floyd Mayweather's September 14 ring return against Canelo Alvarez sold out in less than 24 hours (actually, less than a couple minutes was the early talk from those trying to buy online when tickets went on sale Tuesday), continuing the massive focus on this fight three months out from bell time.

There is plenty of debate over how many tickets were actually made available to the buying public, and how many were bought up by the secondary broker market and all that, but either way, my guess is this fight would have sold out in a day no matter what. There is a truly big-time buzz around this fight already. We're looking at a matchup that has an outside shot -- maybe more -- at breaking a lot of records.

Here are the press release quotes from the principal players:

Floyd Mayweather

"This sell out doesn't surprise me because this is what happens when the best fights the best. I want to thank all the fans for their support. They're going to see a hell of a show on September 14, whether it's at the MGM Grand Garden Arena, on closed circuit in Las Vegas or on Showtime Pay-Per-View."

Canelo Alvarez

"Thank you to everyone who bought tickets to this event. I know I will have plenty of support in the MGM Grand Garden Arena on September 14. This is the biggest night of my career, I will be at my best for it and I will win."

Leonard Ellerbe, Mayweather Promotions

"We're truly excited that the fans have spoken. This is a tremendous fight and the quick sellout is another indication that this is the fight fans want to see. Both fighters thank the fans for their tremendous support."

Richard Schaefer, Golden Boy Promotions

"The demand for tickets, even before they went on sale, was unprecedented. This is the fight the world wanted, we gave it to the fans, and they responded. September 14 will be the biggest night boxing has seen in years. We urge fans to get their closed circuit tickets before they sell out as well!"
