Thomas Oosthuizen was supposed to be the showcased fighter, just like Willie Nelson earlier in the night. Like Nelson, Oosthuizen was tall and failed to impress. Unlike Nelson, he didn't leave with a win. And he may have been very lucky indeed not to leave with his first loss.
Oosthuizen and Brandon Gonzales went to a 10-round draw on scores of 98-92 Gonzales, 96-94 Oosthuizen, and 95-95. BLH scored the fight 96-94 for Gonzales, which is what HBO's Steve Weisfeld had as well.
Oosthuizen (21-0-2, 13 KO) arguably lost the first five rounds of the fight, as Gonzales (17-0-1, 10 KO) was beating him to the punch, and just looked the smarter, more comfortable fighter overall. But as lead trainer Virgil Hunter lovingly whispered erotic motivation to Gonzales between rounds, and the HBO team spent their time talking up commentator Andre Ward and the shared trainer Hunter, Oosthuizen did stage a bit of a rally. On my card, it wasn't quite enough, but there's no doubt Gonzales faded in the second half. Without that first five rounds sweep, it's easy to see Oosthuizen getting the 95-95 draw, or maybe -- maybe -- winning 96-94.
In any event, the 98-92 Gonzales card was, in my estimation, actually the worst of the three. How did you score it?
