Golden Boy Promotions' Richard Schaefer has scheduled a conference call to make a "major fight announcement" today at 3 p.m. ET. It didn't take long for fans to begin to speculate that the announcement would be the highly anticipated bout between Danny Garcia and Lucas Matthysse.
That bout has been rumored for weeks to be planned for the Canelo Alvarez vs. Floyd Mayweather undercard, creating a massive event with a better co-main event/featured undercard bout than anything in recent memory.
According to Dan Rafael at ESPN, that speculation is likely to turn into reality this afternoon:
The immediate speculation was that it would be to announce that Garcia-Matthysse was not only made but that it would be on the Mayweather-Alvarez undercard. According to two sources involved in the promotion, that is exactly what the call is about, both told me Thursday morning.
It doesn't come as a huge surprise, if that indeed is what the call turns out to be for, even though the initial target date for Garcia-Matthysse was Sept. 7. Schaefer has told me numerous times in recent weeks that his aim was to not only get the fight done but to figure out a way to add the very expensive bout to the undercard to make it a truly special show.
We will update Bad Left Hook immediately with the official announcement.
