Isla Verde, Puerto Rico will host an August 17 DirecTV pay-per-view event featuring a step-up main event for flyweight prospect Jonathan "Bomba" Gonzalez, as well as bouts for Felix Diaz, Yudel Jhonson, and Jonathan Oquendo.
Gonzalez (13-0, 11 KO) will make what should be a big leap in competition when he faces former 108-pound champion Giovani Segura (29-3-1, 25 KO) in the night's 10-round main event. The 22-year-old Gonzalez may be getting pushed into a fight that's ahead of his development, which we've seen recently with a lot of Puerto Rican prospects, actually. Segura, 31, is coming off of a decision loss to Edgar Sosa in May, and will be looking to get his career back on track. He's been a very big puncher in the past at 108, but is still somewhat crude, and always will be.
Felix Diaz (13-0, 7 KO) is a Dominican welterweight prospect and a 2008 Olympic gold medalist. He's not the refined sort of fighter you immediately expect when one says "Olympic gold medalist," but he's an interesting prospect. Jhonson (14-1, 9 KO) is a junior middleweight from Cuba whose career took a bit of a hit when he lost to Willie Nelson in May 2012, but he's won two straight since then. Diaz and Jhonson do not have opponents scheduled yet.
Also returning will be 29-year-old super bantamweight Jonathan Oquendo (22-3, 15 KO), who will face Brian Ramirez (10-4, 5 KO) in an eight-round bout. Oquendo hasn't fought since a very exciting loss last year to Wilfredo Vazquez Jr, where he stepped in on pretty short notice and put up a hell of a fight.
