Hadillah Mohoumadi TKO7 Pawel Glazewski

You may remember Glazewski from his controversial decision loss to Roy Jones last year. Even in defeat people figured he was a legitimate light heavyweight contender. Well, so much for that... Anyways, apparently James DeGale did struggle with Mohoumadi last year for good reason after all.

2013-06-29 Bolton Arena, Bolton, Lancashire, United Kingdom

Sky Sports

Anthony Crolla MD12 Gavin Rees (115-113, 115-115, 116-113)

In a fight that easily could have gone either way Crolla upset an aging Rees in a pretty good fight. Round 9 was almost a serious Round of the Year candidate, but a clear one for Crolla. Overall the fight was pretty thin on clear rounds. There was round 2 for Rees and rounds 9 and 11 for Crolla. But somehow Sky Sports commentator Glenn McCrory gave the 2nd round to Crolla anyways. I felt the Sky commentary was unfair to Rees during much of the fight, which likely influenced how people at home scored it. It even influenced me the first time I watched the fight, although in the opposite direction. I was angered to a point that I gave everything close to Rees, who uncoincidentally also happens to be my favorite active UK fighter.

However, upon re-watching the fight I only had Rees winning by a single point, 115-114, giving him rounds 1, 2, 6, 7, 8, and 12 with the 10th even. Crolla was very selective with his punches but he made them count. He didn't appear to throw with the power of Rees but his timing and accuracy was better, which ultimately lead to him doing more damage in the fight. What cost Crolla rounds in my eyes was his lack of activity and overreliance on blocking punches. You just can't block everything. Partially landed blows still count.

But then Rees ran out of gas. From round 9 onward he pretty much had to fight in spurts but also picked his shots better in a few rounds to compensate. In round 10 Rees finished as well as Crolla began. Going into the fight Rees was the one expected to win by knockout but it was Crolla on the verge of one in round 11. The 11th was the most decisive round of the fight yet Rees came right back in the 12th, shading a pretty even round on my card. Thus I thought Rees won the fight by 1 point. But c'est la vie; I can't cry robbery. Congratulations to Crolla and his shiny new WBO Inter-Continental lightweight title. He'll get a nice payday against Ricky Burns. Good for him.

But does Crolla beat Burns? Absolutely not...

If a bout is not mentioned which took place on one of the above cards it’s most likely because I haven’t got around to watching it yet. In the event that I do watch such a bout at a later time it’s still unlikely I will update this results column. My columns will be posted once a week, devoted to cards that most casual American boxing fans haven’t seen or heard of.
