Mares vs Gonzalez: Live stream for results and round-by-round coverage

Showtime presents a world title doubleheader tonight from Carson, California, with Abner Mares facing Jhonny Gonzalez and Victor Terrazas taking on Leo Santa Cruz.

Esther Lin/SHOWTIME

Showtime and Showtime Extreme have a big slate of fights tonight starting at 8:00 pm EDT with the preliminary bouts on SHO Extreme, and continuing at 10:30 pm EDT with the world title doubleheader on Showtime, featuring Abner Mares vs Jhonny Gonzalez and Victor Terrazas vs Leo Santa Cruz.

Mares (26-0-1, 14 KO) will be making the first defense of his WBC featherweight title, which he won on May 4 with an impressive stoppage of the durable veteran Daniel Ponce De Leon. It was Ponce De Leon who won the belt from Gonzalez (54-8, 46 KO) in September 2012, and Gonzalez has been a bit shaky since then in a pair of wins over low-level opponents.

Terrazas (37-2-1, 21 KO) is also making a first defense of a WBC belt tonight, as he puts his super bantamweight title up against rising action star Santa Cruz (24-0-1, 14 KO). Santa Cruz has been pushed hard -- and deservedly so, given his style and activity -- by SHO over the last year and change, and is the favorite to win tonight. He's a former bantamweight titlist, and is looking to pick up his second world title at age 25.

Showtime Extreme

Prospects! Prospects! Prospects! It's the usual SHO Extreme fare, and that's just alright with me. 2012 U.S. Olympians Joseph Diaz Jr (6-0, 4 KO) and Dominic Breazeale (5-0, 5 KO) will be in action. Super bantamweight Diaz will face Noel Mendoza (6-2, 1 KO), while heavyweight project and former Northern Colorado quarterback Breazeale will be taking on Lenroy Thomas (16-2, 8 KO).

Featherweight prospect Julian Ramirez (8-0, 5 KO) and junior welterweight prospect Antonio Orozco (17-0, 13 KO) will also be in action tonight.
