Mares vs Gonzalez results: Showtime Extreme undercard fights

The fights are underway in Carson, California, on Showtime Extreme.

Scott Christ is the managing editor of Bad Left Hook and has been covering boxing for SB Nation since 2006.

Dominic Breazeale KO-5 Lenroy Thomas: Lenroy Thomas has a fullback's name and body. He's not much of a boxer. Breazeale is actually an ex-football player, which Farhood and Tompkins talked about fairly extensively, before coming to the cruel realization that there have been no real success stories for ex-football players in professional boxing, at which point they stopped talking about it, because it did little to give a hopeful answer to the question, "Golly gee, is this the next great American heavyweight?" Breazeale (6-0, 6 KO) isn't untalented -- and his trainer says he's "coachable!" -- but he's still so raw, and he's 28 years old, and he took up boxing at 23, and man, I dunno. I'm having a hard time seeing it is all I can say.

Joseph Diaz Jr TKO-3 Noel Mendoza: Farhood and Tompkins, my new favorite comedy team, mentioned that Mendoza divorced his wife when she didn't want him to box, and then they remarried, and now they're getting divorced again, I guess for simple incompatibility issues that must not have occurred to them that first go-around, since they were focused so much on whether or not Noel should box. She may have been right, as Mendoza is now 27 years old with a 6-3 record, and in his two fights since ending a seven-year absence in 2012, he's been stopped in one by Julian Ramirez and three by Diaz. Diaz (7-0, 5 KO, or 8-1, 6 KO, whichever you prefer) is a good-looking young prospect at 122 pounds, and at 20, there's so much time to see what he develops into.

Antonio Orozco KO-3 Ivan Hernandez: Sadly, Hernandez could not live up to his press release tag of Heavy Hitting Junior Welterweight. Orozco thrashed him to improve to 18-0 (14 KO).

Still to come: Joseph Diaz Jr is currently fighting Noel Mendoza in a six-round bout, and then we'll see Antonio Orozco face Ivan Hernandez in a 10-round fight. Join the live thread!
