Mares vs Gonzalez full fight highlights video

Last night on Showtime, Jhonny Gonzalez pulled the big upset with a first round stoppage of Abner Mares, while Leo Santa Cruz won his second world title.

It was an exciting night of action last night from the StubHub Center in Carson, California, as Showtime Championship Boxing may have run short, but certainly didn't leave many feeling short-changed. Jhonny Gonzalez knocked out Abner Mares in the first round in what may be the Upset of the Year, while Leo Santa Cruz sliced and diced his way through a game Victor Terrazas in three rounds.

It's been a tough run the last couple of weeks for defending titleholders. Mares, Terrazas, Nathan Cleverly, Daniel Geale, Ovill McKenzie, Jhonatan Romero, and Gary Buckland have all dropped their titles, with five world titles part of that mix, shaking up the 122 (Santa Cruz and Kiko Martinez), 126 (Gonzalez), 160 (Darren Barker), and 175 pound (Sergey Kovalev) divisions. The sport is anything but stagnant right now -- we're seeing good matchups being made, and as a result, some real changing of the guard. And there are plenty more world title fights to come as we hit the busy season for 2013.

We'll talk more about the Mares-Gonzalez show tomorrow morning on BLH Radio, and there will be more here on the site today and this evening.
