Boxing results, July 22 - 27: Koki Kameda, Yuri Foreman, Lucas Browne, Odlanier Solis, Marco Antonio Rubio, Cristian Mijares & much more

Fights from this past Monday through Saturday are covered, whether they are high profile or obscure.

Yuri Foreman
Yuri Foreman
Al Bello

Made up for a lack of watching boxing last week by watching WAY too much this week. This also contributed to why this column was posted late...deal with it. As always I only list the results on bouts that I've seen and have access to, so feel free to ask questions.

2013-07-22 Korakuen Hall, Tokyo, Japan

Camcorder

Naoko Yamaguchi TKO1 Chuthaporn Pradissan

WBA female super flyweight title

2013-07-23 Tokyo Big Sight, Tokyo, Japan

TBS Japan

Koki Kameda UD12 John Mark Apolinario (117-109, 118-108, 119-107)

Finally, a Koki Kameda fight where he DOESN'T go life and death with a subpar opponent. Kameda scored knockdowns in round 10 and 12 and easily retained his WBA regular bantamweight title. It was a typical Kameda stinker but it wasn't even Koki's fault this time. Apolinario simply didn't fight like a man that wanted to win.

In other news, super champion Anselmo Moreno is also scheduled to defend his crown shortly. It's about time these 2 (Koki and Chemito) fought each other already. However, Kameda seems to be targeting a move down to super flyweight to pick up a 4th world title in as many weight classes. He already holds Japan's record for being world champion in the most divisions. But even if he does break his own record, by no means will that make him one of Japan's 10 greatest fighters of all time. I suppose he could break the top 20 though, maybe. Maybe I'll write an article on Japan's finest if he pulls it off...

2013-07-24 Roseland Ballroom, New York, New York, USA

GFL.TV

Yuri Foreman UD8 Jamaal Davis (80-72, 80-72, 80-72)

Foreman used his footwork and speed to keep Davis on the outside for the vast majority of the fight, a range where he could connect and Davis could not. Davis was unable to apply the consistent pressure necessary to trap Foreman. And whenever Davis did get inside Foreman would clinch and await a break from the referee.

This was the biggest test for Foreman since making his post-Wolak comeback and he passed with flying colors. He appears to be near prime form and should be ready for 10+ round bouts soon. As for Davis, who came off a bruising loss to Patrick Majewski earlier this year, I'm not sure where he goes from here. I hope he can rebound but I wonder if the wars have caught up to him...

Heather Hardy TKO4 Cassie Trost

Emmanuel De Jesus UD4 Khalik Memminger (40-36, 40-36, 40-36)

Travis Peterkin UD6 Hector Hernandez (60-54, 60-54, 60-54)

Bryant Cruz UD4 Nuwan Jayakody (40-36, 40-36, 40-36)

Louis Cruz UD4 Justin Robbins (40-35, 40-35, 40-35)

Louis Rose UD6 Akil Auguste (59-55, 59-55, 59-55)

Ytalo Perea TKO1 John Orr

------------------------

2013-07-25 The Melbourne Pavilion, Flemington, Victoria, Australia

Fox Sports (Australia) / Sky Sport (New Zealand)

Lucas Browne RTD7 Travis Walker

Walker got his typical early knockdown and fell apart from the 3rd round onward. Browne was down in round 1 while Walker went down in rounds 3, 5, and 6. Walker went for the knockout in round 7 and after he couldn't get it, quit on his stool. Thus Browne improved to 17-0, 15 by way of knockout. Although he's yet to fight Mark de Mori or Alex Leapai, it's safe to say he's the best heavyweight in Australia now.

Jake Carr UD10 Serge Yannick (97-94, 96-95, 96-94)

Australian super middleweight title

Blake Caparello MD12 Daniel MacKinnon (114-114, 118-111, 116-112)

PABA light heavyweight title

Daniel Smith UD4 Henry Torres (40-36, 40-36, 39-37)

This was a damn good 4 rounder. Problem is I don't think the right guy won. Yet 2 judges saw it a shutout for Smith...

Thai TV 3

Teerachai Kratingdaenggym TKO2 Ashley Sean Byrne

PABA welterweight title

2013-07-26 Thunder Valley Casino Resort, Lincoln, California, USA

ESPN

Juan Carlos Burgos D12 Yakubu Amidu (116-112, 112-116, 114-114)

Scott Christ recapped the main event and co-feature here. Can't say I agree with Scott about the score though. Amidu won. Facebook had it the same as the judge with the 8-4 scorecard for Amidu. I thought it was more like 7-5. Overall Burgos was busier but Amidu was more accurate and a lot more durable. Amidu was also the aggressor throughout. At multiple points during the fight it looked like Burgos was on the verge of being knocked out. The last round was clear to Amidu in my eyes, even upon 2nd viewing. ESPN just did a terrible job of giving Amidu credit for all the hard punches he landed. Had Scott scored that round for Amidu, he would have had the same score as me (115-113 Amidu).

Miguel Gonzalez TKO8 Josenilson Dos Santos

------------------------

2013-07-26 Fox Theater, Redwood City, California, USA

The Boxing Network

Paul Mendez UD10 Dashon Johnson (98-92, 99-91, 98-92?)

IBA middleweight title

Bruno Escalante RTD1 Manuel Galaviz

Andy Vences TKO4 Noe Lucas

Juan Hernandez TKO1 Payton Boyea

Ricardo Pinell KO3 Stanley Harvey

Darwin Price TKO4 Luis Sanchez

2013-07-27 Kugelbake-Halle, Cuxhaven, Niedersachsen, Germany

Eurosport / BOXFOTOGRAF.DE

Odlanier Solis KO7 Yakup Saglam

Solis looked pretty good for a fat guy. He's probably still the best fat heavyweight in boxing. He's hoping this IBF Inter-Continental heavyweight title defense against Saglam will get him the winner of Kubrat Pulev vs Tony Thompson, but he'll be lucky enough to get the loser. Odlanier's opposition has been pretty abysmal since his 1st round TKO loss to Vitali Klitschko over 2 years ago, where he did pretty well before the knockdown (and subsequent leg injury).

But let's get back to this Saglam fight. This was another horrible referee job. It's not that he stopped the fight. That was debatable enough. It's that he actually counted to 10 despite the fact that Saglam was completely up by 9. Referees, please, if you don't think a guy is fit to continue, stop the fight. But don't pretend they didn't beat the count when they clearly did. I've seen this happen 3 times in the last few weeks alone now.

That aside, Solis finished the fight with a beautiful overhand right.

Ignacio Mendoza UD12 Ramon de la Cruz Sena (117-111, 117-111, 114-111)

Sena was down in round 2 and out classed early but came back to drop Mendoza HARD in round 4. The average man would have been knocked out. Yet Mendoza got himself back into the fight, despite going down again in round 6, and stayed on his feet for the final 6 rounds to pick up the vacant IBF Inter-Continental light welterweight title. He's expected to be matched with Selcuk Aydin next (who was victorious on the undercard).

Roamer Alexis Angulo TKO2 Dario German Balmaceda

Vacant IBF Latino super middleweight title

Selcuk Aydin KO8 Aaron Herrera

Uensal Arik TKO3 Omar Siala

Agit Kabayel TKO2 Ergin Solmaz

Enad Licina UD6 Marko Rupcic

Vincent Feigenbutz PTS6 Tiran Mkrtschjan

------------------------

2013-07-27 Cotai Arena, Venetian Resort, Macao, Macao S.A.R., China

HBO & UniMas (USA) / Azteca 7 (Mexico)

Zou Shiming UD6 Jesus Ortega (59-55, 59-55, 59-55)

Scott Christ recapped the main events here. Shiming won his 2nd pro fight.

Juan Francisco Estrada UD12 Milan Melindo (118-109, 117-109, 118-109)

Estrada defended his WBO and super WBA flyweight titles.

Evgeny Gradovich UD12 Mauricio Javier Munoz (119-109, 119-109, 120-108)

Scott also recapped this bout here. Gradovich retained his IBF featherweight title.

Andy Ruiz Jr TKO4 Joe Hanks

...and this one here. Ruiz picked up the vacant WBO Inter-Continental heavyweight title.

Rex Tso MD6 Rusalee Samor (57-57, 58-56, 59-55)

...and the rest of the undercard here.

Genesis Servania TSD9 Konosuke Tomiyama (87-82, 84-85, 86-83)

WBO Asia Pacific super bantamweight title

Dave Penalosa TKO3 Ngaotawa Sithsaithong

------------------------

2013-07-27 Palenque de la Fería, Chihuahua, Chihuahua, Mexico

Televisa

Marco Antonio Rubio TKO2 Dionisio Miranda

Rubio got an easy victory and will march on to a mandatory shot at the interim WBC title. His opponent could be Julio Cesar Chavez Jr (again) if Chavez decides to continue to campaign at middleweight.

Marcos Reyes UD10 Amilcar Edgardo Funes Melian (98-90?, 98-91?, 98-91?) [No scores announced]

Jessica Chavez UD10 Tenkai Tsunami (99-91?, 99-91?, 97-93?) [No scores announced]

------------------------

2013-07-27 Comitan, Chiapas, Mexico

Azteca 7 (Mexico) / Azteca America (USA)

Cristian Mijares TKO6 Carlos Jacobo

Mijares rebounded nicely from his questionable split decision loss to Victor Terrazas 3 months earlier. Jacobo was a late replacement for Cristobal Cruz. This bout was contested at a catchweight of 128lbs.

Emanuel Lopez KO7 Deivis Perez

Luis Solis UD6 Joaquin Cruz [No scores announced]

Jose Cifuentes UD6 Albert Pacheco [No scores announced]

------------------------

2013-07-27 Trade And Entertainment Centre "Moskva", Kaspiysk, Russia

Boytsovskiy Klub

Movsur Yusupov RTD5 Mada Maugo

Maugo was dropped in the 5th and quit after the round ended. Yusupov remains an unbeaten light heavyweight prospect. Highlight of the fight came when the referee shoved Maugo for hitting Yusupov after the bell.

Natalia Smirnova TKO3 Veronika Hornyak

Vacant WIBA International, vacant GBU Female, and WBC Silver International Female lightweight titles

Apti Ustarkhanov KO7 Benson Mwakyembe

Mwakyembe complained about being hit behind the head and got on all fours. The referee then counted him out. For whatever reason I can only remember African fighters doing this...but for what it's worth Mwakyembe clearly took multiple, overt power shots to the back of the head. Mwakyembe quit regardless, but Ustarkhanov could have been disqualified by an impartial referee.

Apti Davtaev TKO1 Semen Pakhomov

Gasan Gasanov UD6 Gor Akopyan

Aliklych Kanbolatov UD6 Andriy Danichkin

Vadim Kashin UD6 Roman Ivanov

Richard Gingras D8 Vladine Biosse (76-76, 76-76 [changed from 77-76], 77-75)

Here's a press release detailing the full card, because, well, I don't feel like doing it myself... Ultimately Biosse barely retained his USA New England super middleweight title after initially being announced the loser. Light welterweight contender Hank Lundy was in the ring to put the title around Richard's waist. Poor Richard. He had a career best moment snatched from away from him because someone failed at math.

Chris Chatman UD8 Thomas Falowo (77-75, 77-75, 77-75)

Russell Lamour TKO6 Joe Gardner

Marcia Agripino UD4 Vanessa Greco (39-36, 40-35, 40-35)

Scott Christ recapped this bout here. Karass picked up the vacant NABF welterweight title.

Omar Figueroa UD12 Nihito Arakawa (118-108, 118-108, 119-107)

...and this one here. Figueroa won the interim WBC lightweight title.

Keith Thurman TKO10 Diego Gabriel Chaves

...and this one here. Thurman lifted the interim WBA World welterweight title.

Anthony Dirrell TKO3 Anthony Hanshaw

...and the rest of the televised undercard here.

If a bout is not mentioned which took place on one of the above cards it’s most likely because I haven’t got around to watching it yet. In the event that I do watch such a bout at a later time it’s still unlikely I will update this results column. My columns will be posted once a week, devoted to cards that most casual American boxing fans haven’t seen or heard of. For available footage of the previously reported bouts follow @sweetboxing on twitter. You may also email the author of this piece at rgbivins@gmail.com.
