Francisco Vargas lost the first round, and that was about it, as he dominated Brandon Bennett over 10 rounds tonight on ShoBox, staying unbeaten with a wide unanimous decision win on scores of 99-91, 99-90, and 98-92. BLH had it 99-91 for Vargas.
Vargas (17-0-1, 13 KO) was out-quicked by Bennett (16-1, 7 KO) in the first round, but as he turned up the pressure in round two, Bennett found himself entrenched in a fight he could not win. Vargas drilled Bennett to the body constantly, and worked in uppercuts upstairs that rattled Bennett's cage here and there, too.
Bennett did hold a lot and looked a little overwhelmed frequently, but he did give a serious effort, digging in and fighting his opponent's fight. That's not necessarily a good thing, but the effort was admirable. The Cincinnati native, who was led to the ring by Adrien Broner, was just outgunned, lacking the power to make Vargas take any steps back, and he didn't have the necessary speed or ability to do anything about his inability to hurt his opponent.
