Today at 6:00 pm EDT / 3:00 pm PDT, we'll have live streaming video from the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada, as Floyd Mayweather and Canelo Alvarez, along with the rest of the pay-per-view fighters, take to the scales to officially weigh in for tomorrow night's Showtime boxing pay-per-view extravaganza.
The event will also be broadcast live on Showtime.
This weigh-in is expected to be high on atmosphere, tension, and excitement, as far as weigh-ins go. But there is also some nervous drama before the fighters get there. With Alvarez (42-0-1, 30 KO) coming down a couple pounds more than normal, there are some fight fan jitters about his making the 152-pound limit. From what I've heard, if he misses weight, he forfeits $4 million of his $5 million guarantee.
The last time Canelo was scheduled for a catchweight was against Matthew Hatton, when he won his WBC junior middleweight title. That fight was supposed to be fought at a 150-pound weight. Alvarez didn't make weight, but the fight not only went on, he was allowed to win the title anyway, because the entire event was built around crowning Alvarez as "world champion." This is a far different circumstance.
Mayweather (44-0, 26 KO) could make weight for this in his sleep (wait, why is that impressive?), so there's no worry about him.
On the undercard, of course, Danny Garcia (26-0, 16 KO) will face Lucas Matthysse (34-2, 32 KO) in a fight that has drawn its own big-time attention; Ishe Smith (25-5, 11 KO) defends his IBF 154-pound belt against Carlos Molina (21-5-2, 6 KO); and Ashley Theophane (33-5, 10 KO) takes on Pablo Cesar Cano (26-3, 20 KO).
