Last night in Las Vegas at the FOX Sports 2 televised boxing card, Adrien Broner and Marcos Maidana were involved in a little shoving match that was quickly broken up, with Golden Boy's Richard Schaefer on hand for the confrontation.
Maidana had promised to confront Broner this weekend over some homophobic slurs directed his way on Twitter, as the two are currently negotiating a potential December 14 pay-per-view main event.
Luis Sandoval spoke with Broner about the incident:
I caught up with Broner briefly as he was being ushered out of the arena and he confirmed there was pushing and also said he didn't understand what Maidana told him.
"That motherfucker don't speak English. I don't know what he said. It is what it is, this is boxing. This shit is real," said Broner.
Maidana kept it pretty simple:
"I wasn't planning to be violent or anything. I went to approach Richard Schaefer to say hello and he said something and he disrespected me, and we started pushing each other. That was all. I don't want to make a big deal or a scandal," Maidana said. "We met Broner before when I fought Devon Alexander in St. Louis. We said hello that time and that's it. But now that we're fighting, all I can say is fuck Broner."
It seems pretty likely that Broner-Maidana is going to happen on December 14, as the two sides have both expressed keen interest in the bout, and Golden Boy and Al Haymon have been working to put it together for weeks now. We may also have a bit of a grudge match feel to this one, as the two are already going back-and-forth and making it a little bit personal.
